Six Sigma XmR Chart

Individuals (X) and moving range (MR) chart, is used in Six Sigma when you have continuous data, but only one measurement from each subgroup. These charts are very simple and easy to use.

XmR charts make possible the prediction and management of various processes by viewing
whether or not the process variation is common or special. Common process variations are generally products of expected factors, which are taken into account. Common process variations appear as irregular patterns close to the process mean and are within process tolerance.

Special process variations indicate deficiencies within a process. Special process variations fall well outside tolerance on the XmR chart. Depending on what is a monitored, Six Sigma experts can interpret the information on the XmR chart and determine where and why the process deficiency has occurred.

XmR charts are created and used by Six Sigma Black Belts or Master Black Belts. They have had in-depth statistics studies as part of their training. XmR charts are one of various tools Six Sigma provides to assist businesses formulate data into useful, comprehensible information, which will assist in streamlining process.
